Monday (10/30)

Earnings spotlight: McDonald's 

McDonald's (MCD, $255.83) had a strong start to the year, with the Dow Jones stock up more than 13% for the year-to-date at the end of June. Things started to go south shortly after, though, amid "jitters related to less pricing, a cloudier traffic outlook and higher interest rates," says Oppenheimer analyst Brian Bittner.

Shares are now down roughly 2% since the start of 2023, but analysts are still expecting the fast food company to report solid top- and bottom-line growth in its Q3 report, due out ahead of Monday's open. Specifically, analysts anticipate earnings of $2.83 per share, up 5.6% year-over-year (YoY), on revenue of $6.2 billion (+8.9% YoY).

Bittner, meanwhile, is targeting even higher earnings of $2.96 per share, saying any potential risks to McDonald's financial results – namely forex headwinds – are already priced in. The analyst has an Outperform rating on the blue chip stock, which is the equivalent of a Buy. "The company's unmatched scale and operational resilience has created strong global momentum, particularly in the U.S. where traffic has been positive," Bittner says of one of his top stock picks.

Earnings spotlight: Advanced Micro Devices 

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD, $93.67) will disclose its third-quarter results after Tuesday's close. Analysts, on average, expect the chipmaker to report earnings of 64 cents per share (-4.5% YoY) on revenue of $5.4 billion (-4.4% YoY).

These estimates are "achievable," says Wedbush Securities analyst Matt Bryson, due in part to improving consumer PC shipments. The risk, however, is in the company's current-quarter guidance. While excitement around El Capitan – a supercomputer AMD is developing alongside Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) and the Lawrence Livermore National Lab – could provide momentum for the chipmaker, it is "less clear that AMD can hit elevated expectations which we believe will eventually require better server CPU shipments in light of continued weakness in cloud service providers spend," Bryson writes. 

The analyst has an Outperform rating on AMD, which is the equivalent of Buy, and he's in good company with his bullish outlook. Of the 46 analysts following the semiconductor stock tracked by S&P Global Market Intelligence, 25 say it's a Strong Buy, seven have it at Buy and 14 call it a Hold. This works out to a consensus Buy recommendation.

Earnings spotlight: Apple 

Apple (AAPL, $166.89) has been making a number of headlines recently, including news on its price hikes and the widespread U.S. launch of Apple Pay Later. Additionally, the company has scheduled an event for Tuesday, October 30, where updates to Apple's Mac series are expected.

The tech giant will remain in the spotlight when it unveils its fiscal fourth-quarter results after Thursday's close. Analysts, on average, expect Apple to report earnings up $1.31 per share (+1.6% YoY) on revenue of $84.2 billion (-6.6% YoY).

"Investors need to see a clearer growth pattern emerge before excitement can be unleashed where Apple's concerned," says Sophie Lund-Yates, lead equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown. While iPhone sales are likely to remain muted, the services segment is one area that is seeing continued growth, she notes. 

"This helps underpin profits because margins in software are more attractive than in manufacturing physical goods," Lund-Yates adds. "The crucial part to all of this will be any hint on the outlook as we head into Christmas – it's this trajectory that has the ability to move markets."
